Be Careful What You Wish(fart) For!
YAY! The official Tumblr page for @wishfart is following me! I must be doing something right, and that something is watching and raving about cartoons!! [With the world going to heck in a handcart, I'm immersing myself in animated lore and worlds to get away from it...!]
Plus, it actually premiered in the UK last month, so we didn't have to wait ages for everyone else to see it before us! DOUBLE YAY!!
Moreover, in-between other fine Canadian cartoons on CITV such as Looped, Nerds and Monsters, and The Bagel & Becky Show, I've managed to watch a couple of episodes of this. So that means I can tell you guys what it's about and why you should watch it when it hits the US next year. TRIPLE YAY!!!
This one features a teenage leprechaun-in-training named Dez learning to grant wishes and do other things leprechauns do. But as he’s the next generation of Ireland’s beloved mythological beings, he doesn’t want to listen to his mum and dad talk about how THEY did it back in the day. No, Dez wants to grant wishes and hang out with his best buds! He's accompanied by Akiko, the first Japanese ghost girl character to exist outside of anime (I THINK. Don't quote me on that one!) and a cute and fluffy puffin named, well, Puffin. (Boy, Puffin Rock sure did wonders to increase puffin recognition!)
In this world, the term used for people making the first wish that comes into mind when catching a leprechaun, a wish that hasn't been thought too well or whose phrasing can be exploited against the wisher's odds by Murphy's Law, is called a 'Wishfart'. Hence the title of the show! And because Dez is the kind of leprechaun who's well-meaning, kind, and loyal to his chums, that means Wishfarts tend to happen a lot. So it's up to our three friends to put right what goes wrong in each episode!
Dez and Akiko aren't the only mythological beings to live on this world. You'll see other various creatures from mermaids (Tsuni, who Dez has a crush on) to Hades/Pluto (here going by the moniker of The King of the Underworld), and from mystical cats (Fireball Cat, the owner of a restaurant) to Neptune himself (voiced by - sweet mother of mercy - Chris "Christian Portenza" McLain himself! Golly, he gets around for a reality TV show host. Last I saw him, he voiced an alien in Winston Steinburger & Sir Dudley Ding-Dong*!)
Oh, and Teletoon are smart enough to once again** air a program that gives someone the same name as me... ah. Apparently, this Phil is Dez's greedy leprechaun uncle and one of the many, many foes his nephew and friends must contend with. Gee, thanks a lot, Teletoon! :P
But, seriously, though. The animation looks STUNNING! No thick lines around characters here, critically-minded-readers-who-were-about-to-moan: it's a colourful, almost picture book-like quality that looks like it might've been inspired by Adventure Time but probably wasn't. The backgrounds are immersive and detailed, perfectly serving as backdrops to the crazy antics going on with each episode.
The voices also perfectly match with the characters, as my namedropping throughout this review might have attested. (One more act of namedropping - you know Brian Drummond? Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z? THAT Brian Drummond? He's The King of the Underworld, he is!)
Really, you guys have to see it. If you believe in the legendary and mythological as much as I do, tune in to CITV Tuesdays at 5pm and weekends 4:50pm for a double-bill! While there, check out the other Canadian shows I've mentioned in the third paragraph. Because it'll be a while before Total Drama returns with a brand new season on Netflix and Mr. McLean needs the praise!
Oh, and for those in the US/Canada: I've taken the liberty of not spoiling you beyond the stuff I've mentioned in the review. (Besides which, I don’t think they’ll be doing an origin story, thus you’re alright lore-wise.) So you're all set for when it airs sometime in 2018.
*And speaking of the show, the voice of Winston Steinburger voices Dez! And I saw all of Season 1 of that show this summer, so I can vouch for how awesome Mac Heywood is in the field of voice acting [Oh, and if you‘re reading this, Chris, no hard feelings on the joke this asterisk is linking to - I love your work!]
**Remember Philip the Unicorn from Dr. Dimensionpants? Boy, that was a blast to watch, let me tell you!
